Aging in Place Home Modifications in Charlotte NC — Grab Bars, Ramps & More

Staying home longer means modifying for safety and accessibility. Charlotte handymen install grab bars, handrails, ramps, and other aging-in-place upgrades. Here's what it costs.

Most Charlotte homeowners want to stay in their homes as they age. The right modifications — installed correctly — make that possible while dramatically reducing fall risk. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over 65. The good news: most meaningful aging-in-place modifications are straightforward handyman installations.

Most-Requested Aging in Place Installs

Grab bars. The single most impactful modification. A grab bar beside the toilet and in the shower provides the support needed when rising, sitting, and stepping. Critical installation detail: grab bars must anchor into studs or with proper toggle anchors rated for 250+ lbs. A grab bar that pulls out of the wall during a fall is worse than no grab bar.

Handrail addition or extension. Stairs without a continuous graspable handrail on both sides are a fall hazard. We extend existing handrails to the full stair run and install graspable (not decorative) handrails on open sides.

Threshold ramp installation. Small threshold lips at exterior doors — often just 1/2–1 inch — are trip hazards and wheelchair/walker barriers. Rubber or aluminum threshold ramps install in minutes and eliminate the risk.

Non-slip flooring. We install non-slip bath mats with suction backing, apply anti-slip tape to hardwood stair treads, and install non-slip shower floor inserts.

Lever handle replacement. Round doorknobs are difficult for arthritic hands. Replacing with lever handles throughout the home is a significant quality-of-life upgrade that takes 1–2 hours for a full house.

Motion-sensor night lights. Hallway and bathroom night lights on motion sensors eliminate the need to navigate dark rooms to reach light switches.

ADA and ANSI Standards

FixCraft VP installs grab bars to ANSI A117.1 standards — the same specifications required for ADA compliance in commercial buildings. This means proper height (33–36 inches from floor), correct orientation (horizontal for toilet, 45° for shower entry), and appropriate weight rating.
