Recessed Lighting Installation in Charlotte NC — Can Lights & LED Retrofit
Recessed lighting modernizes any Charlotte room instantly. Here's what can light installation costs, how long it takes, and when you need an electrician vs. a handyman.
Recessed lighting — also called can lights or pot lights — is one of the most requested lighting upgrades in Charlotte homes. When done right, it transforms a room from dated to contemporary without major construction. What's involved depends heavily on whether you have attic access above the ceiling.
Two Types of Recessed Lighting Jobs
LED retrofit (easiest). If you already have recessed cans installed, LED retrofit kits screw directly into existing fixtures. No new wiring, no drywall cutting. One can takes about 10 minutes. Entire kitchens get updated in an afternoon.
New recessed light installation. If there are no existing cans, installation requires cutting holes, fishing wire through the ceiling, and connecting to existing electrical. This is where the job complexity varies:
- —With attic access above: Wire can be run through the attic. Clean, no drywall patching required. A handyman with electrical experience can handle this in many Charlotte homes.
- —Without attic access: Wire must be fished through walls or ceiling cavities. More disruptive, often requires a licensed electrician.
Cost in Charlotte NC
| Job Type | Cost Per Light | Notes | |----------|---------------|-------| | LED retrofit (existing can) | $25–$50 | Quick, no electrical work | | New can with attic access | $85–$140 | Wire fishing from above | | New can without attic access | $120–$200 | More complex routing |
Minimum charges typically apply. Most rooms are done in 2–4 hours.
What to Expect from Recessed Light Installation
Spacing matters. Lights placed too far apart create dark spots; too close and you get glare. Standard rule: space lights apart a distance equal to half the ceiling height. An 8-foot ceiling means lights every 4 feet.
Dimmers are worth it. LED recessed lights paired with a compatible dimmer switch change the feel of a room dramatically. We install Lutron and Leviton dimmers that actually work with LED loads.
Color temperature. 2700K is warm and residential. 3000K is brighter and better for kitchens and bathrooms. 4000K is commercial. Choose before we order fixtures.
